About Roz
Roz Burch originally qualified as a social worker in Yorkshire where she worked mostly within the not-for-profit sector with lone parent families and their children. She developed group work with parents on management of children’s behaviour and growing confidence in parenting skills by encouraging self esteem and sharing simple tips or techniques.
From 1980 until 1995 Roz also worked as a general adviser and then founded an independent advice and information centre in a deprived area of Leeds which now has a sister project delivering community care with older people. This centre delivers a high quality advice service to an area of the city which is an advice desert. The community care of the same project works in close partnership with the local City council and shares advice-giving with very practical support for isolated, disabled or vulnerable elders. This ranges from comprehensive needs assessments to thermal underwear, from energy-saving light bulbs to arranging transport to day centres. Most of the staff of both aspects of the project are well trained volunteers.
More recently, Roz has worked as a project manager in various capacities:
- alongside the Probation Service training and supporting volunteers working in courts and with low-risk offenders;
- for Warwickshire County Council to develop their collaboration with local people in preventative work;
- for a local charity in Warwick where she managed a new community development project on a tough estate;
- for Voluntary Action Leicester around the outer estates of the city developing volunteering opportunities and providing training;
- and for two Citizens Advice Bureaux - first as a development worker and adviser, then specialising in disability and other welfare benefits and finally as volunteer support officer - recruiting and training volunteer advisers in all aspects of their role.
